The homeowners of this project had an interesting dilemma. Their property had superlative views to the south and west out their backdoor. They had a nice flagstone patio and a firepit. They also had a large raised deck that flows into the house. The problem was that there was no respite from the blazing sun. As tantalizing as the Front Range views were, it was too hot to hang out on the deck. Our solution was a large gabled porch roof over the existing deck. One important nuance about this porch is that there's no truss or transfer beam at the outer gable end. We didn't want a horizontal transfer beam to interfere with the mountain views. To solve this issue, there is a massive hidden steel plate that's shaped like a boomerang.
