Works of Art Bathrooms
These homeowners have incredible taste in decor and an enviable eye for color. They also own an art collection that spills into every room. They’re a delight to work with because they’re willing to push design limits.
The homeowners engaged SoBo to remodel three bathrooms, asking us to add as much personality to the commodes as found in the rest of their beautifully-appointed home.
Small but mighty.
Typically, bathrooms carry minimal square footage compared to adjoining rooms. People tend to think a small space would be overwhelmed with large prints and bold tile choices. Not true! You can lean toward powerful patterns and bold scale, especially in a tiny room.
We kept the powder room’s concrete flooring in place since it had a fantastic pattern and color. Cubist style geometric wallpaper complimented the floor; tonal hues didn’t compete with the tile’s vibrancy yet updated it a modern vibe. The house has a lot of mixed metals so we incorporated a brass sconce paired with brushed nickel. Walnut cabinetry ties in with the kitchen’s cabs just steps away.
Primary bathroom strikes a balance
The primary suite’s bathroom is shared daily, so we struck a balance in masculine/feminine aesthetics. Clean, non-fussy lines dominated the design. The floor is a highlight; boomerang-shaped porcelain from WOW Design with a wood and concrete effect runs the length of the room, around into the toilet closet and up the wall. Wainscott-look tiling in the shower and toilet room is a fresh and bright option to wood that holds up against humidity.

Love It, Hate It, Never Thought About It
The primary suite’s walk-in closet is accessed through the bathroom (in the photo, it’s the door on the right in the mirror). Some may consider this strange but most probably never considered it. It tucks away nicely. If you think about it, it’s the most natural place for a closet as you change outfits after transition points of a shower or waking/going to bed. Plus, for those with differing rise and bedtimes, it’s less disruption in the bedroom for the person trying to sleep.
“Her” Bathroom
This full bath was designated as “her” room. She wanted to linger in the tub enveloped in a feminine setting. Layers of patterns and soft hues create a calming effect. Our interior designer’s favorite feature was a unique floor pattern of penny tiles to compliment hand glazed Ann Sacks backsplash tiles. A custom shower curtain adorns the tub and delivers floor-to-nearly ceiling interest.

Sometimes a quirk becomes a perk.
The wall behind the toilet housed mechanical and plumbing pipes, so we couldn’t recess tall deep shelving. However, we could go deep halfway down the wall, and shallow toward the ceiling. This became a perfect showcase alcove for the first piece of art she purchased as an adult.
We believe each room deserves special treatment and attention. Compact rooms create a special challenge, especially when humidity and water are prevalent. We jump at the chance to remodel bathrooms since they have unique considerations. Break the mold and go bold if your design sense leads you that way. We’re here to design elements that delight, even in the smallest spaces.
